Ask A Somali
I read and hear a lot about how the Somali community is not interested in getting involved with the other communities in Minnesota. I don’t know where this is coming from. Let me tell you something, we love our neighbors. Really.
SYL is taking action in San Diego
After watching the news and hearing about the catastrophe occurring in the Horn of Africa, a group of Somali youth both men and women in San Diego, California got together and decided to take action in order to help our dying people. The Somali Youth League of San Diego started out with one aim, to help the refugees in the camps who are dying due to a lack of basic human needs. The group immediately brainstormed quick and simple ways to raise funds for the poor and less fortunate people.

The Evil of Famine

NAIROBI — Famine is set to spread to two new southern Somali regions with millions of people reeling from extreme drought, the top UN humanitarian aid official for the war-torn nation warned on Wednesday.
“We are anticipating that two more areas of southern Somalia will be included,” Mark Bowden, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Somalia, told AFP.
Middle and Lower Juba are expected to be added to five other regions already declared by the UN to be in famine, including parts of the war-ravaged capital Mogadishu, he said.
“These areas were anticipated, and we are waiting only for the statistical analysis to confirm,” Bowden added.

US charges accused Somali pirate negotiator again
(Reuters) – A Somali man already facing U.S. charges of negotiating a ransom for four Americans later killed by pirates was indicted on Thursday for allegedly playing the same role in another incident with 22 hostages held seven months.
Mohammad Saaili Shibin was brought to the United States in April to face federal court charges in Norfolk, Virginia, over the pirating of an American yacht in February off the coast of Somalia and taking hostage two American couples who were later killed.
Ending the famine in Somalia
Unfortunately, the famine has killed tens of thousands of people (mostly children) and it threatens millions more in Somalia. Facing a problem of this magnitude, this is not the time for a blame game. It is the time for action in order to save as many people as possible from the famine in Somalia.
The United States funded Famine Early Warning Systems (FEWS) has alerted national and international players in the East Africa region about the crisis at least six times over the last year. But, the international community has ignored these warnings.
Only when the international media started to broadcast horrific images of the starving Somalis the world realised the severity of the situation. As the FEWS predicted, many Somali pastoralists and agro-pastoralists have lost their livelihood in the region, thus, facing mass starvation.
